综合法新社和路透社报道，马克龙告诉记者，这些国家的边界是不可侵犯的，并认为“外交官不应使用这种言辞”。
中国外交部就此事强调，中国尊重苏联解体后各加盟共和国的主权国家地位，并暗示卢沙野的相关言论并不代表中国政府立场。
中国驻法使馆也在官网上说，卢沙野关于乌克兰问题的表态不是中国官方政策的宣示，而是在电视辩论中的个人观点表达，各方不应过度解读。中国在有关问题上的立场没有变化。
在这之后，欧盟外交与安全政策高级代表博雷利（Josep Borrell）认为，“北京与大使发表不可接受的言论划清界线”，并说这是好消息。
